Why a tighter thermostat schedule can raise your bill

Short-cycling a system to chase a setback schedule works in a dry climate. In Tampa Bay's humidity, it usually costs more than it saves.

A lot of energy advice is written for climates that aren't Florida's. "Set it back eight degrees while you're at work and let it recover in the evening" is genuinely good advice in a dry climate. In Tampa Bay's humidity, it can quietly cost more than it saves — and it's one of the most common efficiency questions we get asked on service calls.

Why the setback strategy backfires here

A central AC system removes humidity as a byproduct of cooling the air — it's not just cooling, it's dehumidifying. When you let the house warm up eight or ten degrees during the day, humidity climbs right along with the temperature. Bringing the house back down when you get home means the system has to run a long, continuous cycle to pull both the temperature and the humidity back down at once. That long recovery run is far less efficient than shorter, steadier cycling, and in a humid climate it can leave the house feeling clammy even after the thermostat hits its target.

The bill isn't the only cost

Long, humid recovery cycles don't just cost more on the utility bill — they're harder on the system. Extended run times mean more wear on the compressor and blower motor over a cooling season, which is part of why we see more repair calls in August from homes running an aggressive setback schedule than from homes running a shallow one. If your energy bill has crept up and your schedule hasn't changed, it's worth a look at how the thermostat is actually set before assuming the system itself is the problem.
