Most unusual sounds from an outdoor unit — a rattle, a mild hum, a click on startup — are worth mentioning at your next maintenance visit, not an emergency. A small number of sounds mean something is actively failing, and running the system longer makes the eventual repair more expensive, or turns a repair into a replacement.

The sounds worth stopping the system for

A loud grinding or screeching from the outdoor unit usually means a failing motor bearing — continuing to run it can seize the motor entirely. A hard metallic banging, different from a normal startup click, often means a loose or failing internal component that can damage the compressor if it keeps running. Either one is worth switching the system off and calling, not waiting out.

What’s genuinely fine to wait on

A soft, consistent hum, mild rattling from something loose on the cabinet, or normal cycling clicks at startup and shutoff are all typical operation — worth a mention at your next visit, not a reason to shut the system down in the middle of a Tampa summer.
